(Which I haven't worn in years, thank GOD!!)

Maybe the idea is to be as constricted and as uncomfortable as humanly possible.....maybe we're supposed to listen better that way...ha-ha
Ahhh....I remember the sweet freedom and release from getting out of my "church clothes" every Sunday (literally and figuratively) not so long ago.....things are different now. :-)

Paige

Haven't seen a tie at my church in a while. In fact that may have been an accident by a first time visitor.

Drew,

As always thanks for commenting. I have heard the "give Jesus your best" line very often. My question is, who determines what my best is? I usually wear jeans and a polo when I meet on Sunday mornings... sometimes I wear a t-shirt though - whatever my mood is. I think these are my "best" clothes because they are the most comfortable.

By the way, most of my jeans cost more money than the dress slacks I use to wear at SEBTS... so if price has anything to do with best, my jeans had to be them.

Oh yeah, whenever anyone argues about the best by saying that Jesus wore like sack-cloth or whatever... they always say something retarded like, "Yeah, but that was the best for Jesus' time."

*barf*

Lew

P.S. Jesus did make the best wine once!

Lew, great questions. I don't normally wear a tie to church, but I may have to start if I become employed by one (a slight possibility). Someone once told me that I should dress a certain way because I "wanted to give Jesus my best". I tried to convince him that my best had nothing to do with my clothing as long as it was humble and modest, but he just didn't agree. Anyway, I don't think there's a good answer.

Everyone, thanks for hilarious comments. I laughed heartily.

Lew,

Reminds me of the story about a cowboy who was rebuked by the preacher for wearing his old raggy clothes to the meeting of the church. The preacher told the cowboy to ask God what he should wear before he came next Sunday.

Sure enough he turned up at the meeting next Sunday dressed in the same old clothes plus an equally raggy hat. And, as previously, he sat alone.

After the service the preacher challenged him over the instructions he had given the previous Sunday.

The old cowboy said, "I did ask God about what I should wear".

"Well! What did He say?"

" He told me that He didn't know what I should wear, because He had never been in this church.”

Steve,

I have been asked that before too. The assumption, of course, is that we're meeting with God when we "go to church". But, I believe that God is always with me. So... should I wear a suit and tie in the shower? I mean, God is there, right? Or is he not? Maybe he didn't look when I'm in the shower.

Lew,

Actually, I wrote that passage from memory. One of my earliest Sunday School memories is memorizing that passage. I got a gold star! Unfortunately, I couldn't remember the book and chapter. I wasn't sure if it was in I or II Hesitations, or if it was from the book of Rude.

-Alan

Alan beat me to the punch with a witty comeback, but mine was not going to be nearly as good anyway. That was hilarious!

I suppose that those who wear clip-ons either believe in "easy-believism" salvation, or believe that it's much easier to lose your salvation. It can be gone in a snap ;)

Ahem...all seriousness aside, though...I don't have an answer for you, either, but I can supply the question that was always given in return to the question you posed: If you were going to visit the President of the United States, wouldn't you wear your best clothes?

Doesn't make much sense to me, either, but that was always the "answer" I was given while growing up.

These questions remind me, Lew. Have you ever read Frank Viola's "Pagan Christianity"?

Lew,

The tie is straight, reminding us of truth of Jesus. The windsor knot reminds us of Windsor Castle in England which stands for the royalty of Jesus Christ. It is tied tightly around the neck to remind us that God can kill us any time he wants to. The silk comes from China which means we are being missionaries by wearing ties. (Hesitations 17:3-6)

-Alan
