David

I am all for providing children (and parents) a safer alternative to going home to home... I am not sure if other malls do this, but the Maine Mall always encouraged them to give out candy on Halloween. You will literally see thousands of parents and children walking around in their costumes. It was really the best way to get some loot, as far as I'm concerned - plus it allowed children to now wear their snow suits over their costumes!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Barb, sfo

Thanks for taking the time to visit and read some of my posts. I think Scripture is pretty clear about this... we need to be discerner's, not judger's. Thanks again.

God's Glory,
Lew

I'm here via Enjoy the Journey.

I have read several of your posts and I want to thank you for writing this one and the others. Your emphasis on "don't judge others" is right on and something we all need to remember.

Good points.
And with it's problems (which I've read on other posts and completely agree with) one thing that 'harvest parties' seemed to do was awaken the community to provide alternatives.
Our kids are going to local business downtown for trick-or-treating. A safe alternative to houses and not as cheesy as a 'harvest party', but just as safe.
The church should find a way to engage in community in the community, not draw away from it.

Lew -

Good post. You said, "Most of all, remember these words, "Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this--not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother's way.""

We have to make sure that we are not judging either way. Just as those who choose fall festivals should not judge those who trick-or-treat, so should those who trick-or-treat not judge those who choose not to. I am detecting self-righteousness from many these days on both sides of the coin ... Everyone has their reasons for what they choose.

:)

~Heather

Tim,

I use to envy my people who grew up within the Christian tradition. I thought they had it so good, being raised with good Christian values, go to all the youth meetings and trips, etc. But now I have realized that alot of that comes with some baggage and I am grateful to God that I do not carry any of that baggage... I don't think I would be able to handle it if I did.

Sally

You got the point exactly... I am a firm believer in this.

Alan

Yeah, I believe that's what Paul teaches us directly. It's ashame we so often miss these themes in his writings and sometimes even use them to condemn others.

Dan

Yes, the Haunted Hayride in Gorham was just about the lamest thing ever. But I was like 20ish when I went on it.

For Halloween I prefer to give candy from the door. I reserve my trunk candy for everyday occasions.

God's Glory,
Lew

I loved your post, Lew! I think you've hit on something key: You can live by your own convictions without condemning others who do not have the same convictions.

-Alan

Lew,

Thanks for humanising the event so much. Those who grew up without much Christian superstition usually see it from exactly that point of view. After all, there are only small sub-communities who actually practice pagan versions of it along with very few who look at their traditional roots and even fewer who're satanists.

Give me chocolate any time of the year!
