Since starting the Slow Carb diet from 4 Hour Body, I added a protein shake (which is not very “slow carb”). But I am also doing the Occam’s Protocol workout, so I need the extra protein to assist in gaining muscle. To get started I needed to buy a blender. I did not want a regular size blender, since I was going to be making a smoothie for one — every night. I knew there were personal blenders out there like the Magic Bullet, but those are way to expensive. Then I found the Hamilton Beach Personal Blender! I have been using it since February, every night (except for Saturday nights) and have been thoroughly impressed. It even has a travel lid that you can use to drink from. So I blend, drink, and wash out the blender jar every night.

This is the recipe I have been using :

  • 8oz orange juice (there are some measurement marks on the blender jar)
  • 3 large frozen strawberries (frozen strawberries are great because it helps keep the drink cold)
  • 1 whole kiwi (cut in half and peeled)
  • 1 Scoop of Whey Protein (strawberry)

I put the ingredients in the blender in the order that they appear. To make the smoothie extra smooth, I have found that this routine works best — 60 pulses and 40 seconds of blend. I was drinking half at night and half in the morning, but this month I have started drinking all of it right before bed.

For my whey source, I’ve been using the Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein, which contains some creatine. 1 scoop, 6 days a week, lasts the month. I tried to put in two scoops and it just did not work for me. Each scoop contains 26 grams of protein. You can pick up a container at Walmart for around 15$… pretty much the cheapest Whey you will find on the market. There are mixed reviews on the web, most people think the Chocolate tastes the best. And a lot of people think it tastes “gritty” but many attribute that to the added creatine. I have not had a problem with it at all, both the taste (mixed in my smoothie) and the grittiness have been fine. In fact, I think the seeds from the added kiwi makes the smoothie more gritty than the whey protein.
